1. “Resolution Solution”

I’ve given a lot of thought recently to the power of ‘resolutions’ – to that basic human instinct that continually drives us to improve ourselves and to expand our horizons. For many, the New Year acts as the catalyst – but just as likely, a new month, a new week or even a new day can provide that platform for change.

Maybe your ‘new you’ resolution is to join a gym and get fit? (‘Though I find the only thing to get leaner is your bank balance ;-) !!) Or maybe you hope to make more far-reaching changes - to forge a new career… move abroad… return to college… end a destructive relationship… or start a family?

Perhaps, Donald, you’re reading this and resolving to finally conquer your anxiety?

The trouble with resolutions, however, is sticking to them! All too often, within weeks, they’ve fallen by the wayside. Why is that? Why do we all struggle so much to maintain our resolve?

2. “I spent months in my bedroom afraid of the world… now I’m planning to SEE the world!” As he embarks on his dream trip across America , former anxiety-sufferer, MARK ELLIS, describes his amazing recovery using The Linden Method…

Q. What were you like before you became affected by anxiety?

What was I like…? You couldn’t really tie me down – I was just always on the go, always busy, always up to something – just full of energy. My friends and family would describe me as having been very energetic, lively, bubbly – the centre of attention. If there was a crowd I was always the joker!

Q What changed…? Describe how you became an anxious person…

There was no set time or place when I first realised I was becoming anxious. Around summer ‘95, I just noticed that things were getting harder to do. I was getting anxious about certain things. My own particular one was driving. I noticed when I was driving I’d get more and more anxious, and that’s where it all started from really. As I got more and more anxious, the panic developed, and then the agoraphobia did, to a state where I didn’t go out of the house. I made so many journeys where I’d set out and then turn around after about a mile and come home.

Q. How did the anxiety manifest itself?

When it was at its worst, it was really bad. It got to a stage where I didn’t leave the house for nea rly twelve months. Just stuck in the house, in my bedroom. Just to get out of bed most mornings was a chore… actually most mornings I didn’t get out of bed at all. And of course I had the dependency on the Valium, the tranquilisers, to stop the panic attacks. It did get very bad.
